Humanity Towards Others

‘I am because we are’.

We strive to create sustainable and socially responsible projects.

Ubuntu Hope Charity is a Canadian nonprofit that alleviates poverty through sustainable development in underserved communities.

Founded by Tonya Roy, a registered nurse and educator at Douglas College, the organization embodies the African philosophy of “Ubuntu,” which translates to “I am because we are,” emphasizing interconnectedness and shared humanity.

Mission & Values

Ubuntu Hope Charity’s mission is to provide access to food, clean water, healthcare, and education through community-driven, sustainable solutions. The organization prioritizes local consultation to ensure that its projects meet the specific needs and aspirations of the communities it serves.

International Initiatives

The charity’s international efforts span several countries:

  • Ghana: Established many clean water drill sites and a maternity clinic in Frankadua, providing a safe and clean environment for childbirth. It has also supported sustainable agriculture, health services, education, and sports programs in the region.
  • Kenya: Operates an ongoing food program at the Agape Orphanage in Nairobi, delivering fruits and vegetables twice a week to support the children’s nutrition.
  • Dominican Republic: Provides educational support to children in Puerto Plata, aiming to enhance access to quality education.

Local Initiatives

In Canada, Ubuntu Hope Charity focuses on education and community engagement:

  • Douglas College: Collaborates with the Douglas College Foundation to offer bursaries for BSN nursing students pursuing field service-learning experiences.
  • New Westminster Secondary School: Supports inclusive education by providing bursaries for students in an inclusive education program.
